rival Berlin, all at a fraction of the price of any of these other cities.

The savings extend to hotels to a certain point, but during peak season the rates are likely to be similar to what you would find throughout Europe. That said, bargains can still be found in the down season and in budget accommodations.

Budapest’s name comes from the two cities that formed it: Buda and Pest. Each former city, located on either side of the river Danube, maintains a different atmosphere. Stay in Buda for grand, leafy boulevards surrounded by palaces and grand houses. If you want to experience Budapest as the gritty, cool nightlife hub that it is, you’re better off staying in Pest. That said, there are plenty of upmarket hotels in Pest, including several on our list.

The city is divided into numbered districts, with most of the gay activity being centered around Districts V, VI, and VII in Pest. Cheap and convenient public transport links make it easy for you to get around no matter where you are, and the city is also generally pleasant to walk around in.

Kempinski Hotel is a 5-star hotel in the heart of the city center. The design is understated and elegant, created by British designer Alex Kravetz. Large windows in all the rooms overlook Erzsébet Park or the streets of historic Pest.

There are two restaurants on-site, including a branch of the legendary Nobu – the first in Central Europe. Due to its fame and popularity, it is recommended to book ahead of time. For a more casual dining experience, there is a brasserie serving Hungarian-Viennese dishes with a modern flair as well as a cafe serving cakes and sandwiches. Two bars, Blue Fox The Bar and Nobu Bar, keep the high-class cocktails coming.

The hotel features its own art gallery, as well as a bright and airy luxury spa. The spa includes a small gym with some good cardio equipment as well as an indoor pool.

Kempinski Hotel is located in the Inner City, one of the two neighborhoods in central District V. This places it within close walking distance of many of the tourist attractions in the city, such as St Stephen’s Basilica and Buda Castle. There is a metro station (Vörösmarty tér, Line 1) just a couple of minutes from the hotel door, so you are always connected to the rest of the city.

Most of gay Budapest is also close by: Oops @ Anker’t, VIBE, and Habrolo are all under a 10-minute walk. Alterego, the city’s biggest gay club, and Coxx, Hungary’s largest cruise club, are both 15 minutes away from the hotel.

InterContinental Budapest is located right on the banks of the Danube, a short walk from the iconic Chain Bridge. Most of Budapest’s gay nightlife can be easily reached on foot, including favorite spots like VIBE (popular with a young gay crowd), Oops @ Anker’t (busy Friday night dance party) and Habrolo (friendly and low-key gay cafe bar).

The hotel itself is a classic example of a luxury chain hotel, with impeccably efficient and well-trained staff and tasteful, elegant decor. It was selected as Hungary’s leading business hotel by the World Travel Awards 2018, but it has something to offer for all types of travelers.

The rooms come in various categories, all of which have large windows and good amenities. The Classic and Superior rooms are on the smaller side, although the latter category does come with stunning views of Buda Castle across the Danube river. For more room and even better views, go for a Deluxe room or one of the beautiful modern suites.

The hotel bar has a lovely terrace overlooking the river and serves fun, inventive cocktails. The attached restaurant focuses on local, seasonal ingredients for a modern take on Hungarian cuisine. Intercontinental Budapest also features a state-of-the-art spa with an indoor heated swimming pool. The gym is small but excellent, with a solid selection of both cardio and weights equipment. It is open 24 hours for hotel guests.

Sofitel Budapest brings all the style and reliability of the Sofitel brand to the banks of the Danube. From the second you step into the hotel’s breathtakingly tall atrium, you are met with cutting-edge decor by French designer Jean-Phillipe Nuel, starting by the airplane model hanging from the ceiling.

The design throughout most of the hotel is playful and starkly contemporary, but the rooms themselves are decorated in a more traditional style. All rooms feature large bay windows for plenty of light, as well as marble bathrooms with bathtub and Sofitel’s signature ultra-comfy beds. Upgrade to a Luxury Room for unparalleled river views, or to an Executive Room or Suite for exclusive Club Millesime perks, such as butler service and access to the lounge.

An exceptional breakfast is served every morning at the terrace restaurant, while another restaurant offers a blend of high-end Parisian and Hungarian dining. The hotel spa has an indoor pool and sauna, and the gym is extremely well-equipped with cardio and weights equipment.

Sofitel Budapest benefits from an exceptional location just by Budapest’s Chain Bridge, across the Danube from the beautiful Buda Castle. Many of the city’s best sightseeing, shopping, dining, and nightlife destinations are in the surrounding area, including most of what gay Budapest has to offer. There is a tram station a stone’s throw from the hotel door. It is on the city’s most picturesque line, the Number 2 service that runs along the river.

If what you’re looking for is Hungarian opulence, this is the hotel for you. Everything about New York Palace drips with 19th-century luxury, from the beautiful exterior to the intricate gilded decoration of the New York Cafe. However, touches of modernity keep the hotel grounded in the present day, as can be seen in the bright and airy central courtyard.

All the rooms feature this striking blend of old and new, with antique-style furniture offset by playfully contemporary design touches. Most rooms are very spacious and all are supremely comfortable, with great beds and beautiful marble bathrooms.

A highlight of the hotel is the New York Cafe, a decadent example of Belle Epoque decoration that has been called “the most beautiful cafe in the world”. Both the hotel bar and the breakfast room offer similarly grand surroundings, and the breakfast itself is incredible.

There is a beautiful sauna and indoor pool, with a small and basic gym attached. Do note that the pool will be unavailable for most of summer 2019.

The hotel is located in District VII, the heart of Budapest’s legendary nightlife. Simpla Kert, one of the city’s most famous “ruin bars”, is less than 10 minutes away from the hotel, as are many other great venues. If you’re looking for something more hardcore, Hungary’s largest cruise bar, Coxx, is just a five-minute walk from your hotel room.

Corinthia Hotel Budapest opened in the 19th century as the Grand Hotel Royal, often noted as one of the inspirations for Wes Anderson’s Grand Budapest Hotel.

The rooms are decorated in an elegant and traditional style and are all very spacious and comfortable. Go for the Executive category or one of the gorgeous suites for extra perks like a Nespresso coffee machine and complimentary access to the Royal Spa and Club Executive lounge.

The hotel features a traditional Brasserie, a traditional pan-Asian restaurant, a Hungarian-Spanish fusion bistro, and a high-end Maltese restaurant. As well as the lobby bar, guests at the Corinthian have direct lobby access to the Orfeum club, a swanky jazz and swing music venue.

The marvelous indoor pool from 1886 is without a doubt one of the hotel’s highlights, offering perhaps the classiest swim of your life. It is the centerpiece of the large (and recently renovated) Royal Spa, which also offer saunas, steam rooms, treatments, and a gym. The latter is small but high-quality, with a good selection of equipment for all your workout needs.

Corinthia Hotel Budapest is located where District VI meets District VII, which is an excellent position for enjoying the city’s best nightlife. Several great gay venues are nearby, with Oops @ Anker’t, AlterEGO, and Coxx all about a 10-minute walk from the hotel.

This places it just next to the beautiful Buda Castle but within easy walking distance of the exciting nightlife and attractions of Pest. Popular gay venues like AlterEGO and Habrolo are about a half-hour walk away, but you can easily reach them by public transport or taxi.

It is a stylish hotel, featuring sleek modern decor throughout and large windows that make the most of the incredible location. It is also brand new, having opened in 2018. All of the spaces look great, but the roof terrace restaurant with panoramic views is a highlight.

The hotel has a small but well-equipped gym with great views over the Chain Bridge, which all guests have complimentary access to. Another nice perk is free E-bike rental, especially given Budapest’s increasingly bike-friendly layout.

The Danubius Hotel Gellért is an iconic Budapest landmark, opened in 1918 and has hosted celebrities, politicians, and other influential European figured during its lifetime. It is housed in a striking Art Deco building on the banks of the Danube, and is home to the famous Gellért Baths.

There is a sense of faded glory to the hotel – the interiors have not been maintained as well as they should have, and the decor and amenities in the rooms can be bare-bones. However, the rooms are all comfortable and clean, and the hotel is efficiently run by a friendly team of staff.

The Gellért Baths are well-known for their grandiose elegance, and they definitely do not disappoint. Colorful mosaics, elegant domes, and an absolutely stunning central swimming pool all combine to make this hotel’s spa worth the visit. Hotel guests get 30% off admission price for the Baths.

The hotel is located on the Buda side, next to the Citadella and to a bridge crossing over to Pest. RUDA Thermal Baths, a traditional Budapest hot springs popular with gay men, is a 10-minute walk from the hotel, as is Why Not Cafe & Bar, the starting point to many gay Budapest nights.

Continental Hotel opened in 2010 on the site of an Art Deco bathhouse, and it has preserved the beauty of the original building. The curved stained glass ceiling of the lobby is a remarkable example of this, as are the polished marble floors and gorgeous main entrance.

In the rooms, the decor is more modern and subtle, with small nods to the Art Deco aesthetic. All rooms are extremely comfortable, with the Deluxe and Executive categories being particularly luxurious. The suites are also excellent, each with their own private balcony.

Mercure Budapest City Center is one of the most popular gay-friendly hotels in Budapest, probably due to its great location close to the river and most gay venues. It also comes with the assurance of quality from a trusted international brand.

Hotel Memories is a perfectly designed boutique-style hotel in the heart of Budapest’s nightlife district. Despite the central location, the hotel itself is located on a quiet street in the heart of the Jewish quarter, meaning you won’t be kept up at night.

The design is soothing and minimalist, dominated by cool neutral grays and blues. All the rooms are the same size (which is relatively small), but the compact layout is very well thought-out so it doesn’t feel cramped. Amenities include a mini-fridge, coffee capsule machine, and safe. The only difference between the different categories is the size of the beds, as well as the fact that some rooms offer city or Synagogue views.

The hotel offers a varied and tasty breakfast selection of hot and cold dishes. There also is a small, basic gym area with a sauna and jacuzzi.

Bohem Art Hotel is the result of a collaboration with young Hungarian artists to create an original, inventive hotel stay. Each room is completely unique, even within the same categories. Some rooms are on the smaller side, but the creative decor and well-planned design make up for this.

The facilities are limited, but the perks are not. The generous breakfast buffet has a sparkling wine option, and there is a daily happy hour at the lobby with free drinks and snacks.

The hotel is conveniently located between the banks of the Danube and Vaci Street, Budapest’s main shopping hub. It also happens to be about 2 minutes away from Why Not Cafe & Bar, an extremely popular gay meeting spot and the best place to start a gay Budapest night out.

Thanks to its great location, cool vibe, and high-quality service, Bohem Art Hotel is rated among the top 20 hotels in Budapest on TripAdvisor. It is also a very gay-friendly hotel in Budapest, with a bespoke gay map of the city being among its concierge offerings.

This hotel is made up of several spacious apartments, each including everything you need to make yourself at home in Budapest. You can choose from a 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, or Studio apartment, all of which come with a fully-equipped kitchen.

The decor is a bit outdated, but everything is extremely comfortable and perfectly maintained. The biggest draw by far is the amount of space you get for such a central location, which is truly incomparable. Indeed, the hotel is located just one street back from the Danube, in the Inner City area. Most of Budapest’s sights, shopping, and gay nightlife can be reached on foot.

The hotel features a small but well-rounded fitness area with a sauna, jacuzzi and a good gym with both weights and cardio equipment.

The rooms are decorated in a simpler, modern style, always with large windows and comfortable furnishings. The Palace Restaurant is a highlight, with beautiful old-fashioned decor and truly delicious dining. The interiors of this boutique hotel are bright, modern, and colorful. The rooms are all decorated in this contemporary style, with large windows to guarantee plenty of natural light.

The smallest rooms are quite small (ideal for a solo traveler looking for a stylish budget option), but the larger rooms are nice and spacious. There is also a large two-bedroom apartment available at a separate location, which includes a fully-equipped kitchen. All rooms have very comfortable beds with a choice of pillows.

Breakfast is fantastic, with a wide selection of fresh fruit, a variety of breads, cold cuts, hot dishes, and more. This is usually included in the room rate, but not for the self-serviced apartment. A nice touch is the complimentary breakfast pack if you need to leave before breakfast starts at 7 AM.

The location is perfect for just about anything you might want to do in Budapest, sitting between the Danube and Vaci shopping street. Single, Double, and Superior rooms are on offer, some with Danube river views. The decor is very basic, but the rooms are quite spacious – the single room is especially roomy for one person.

The hotel is a bit dated and not as well maintained as it could be, however, the main draw here is an incredible price in a central location. In short, it’s good for budget-conscious travelers who just need a place to crash at night.
