Gay Popular Hotels in Central Lisbon

a vibrant, varied gay nightlife.

This is mainly concentrated in the southern area of the city, in the neighborhoods of Bairro Alto and Principe Real. The former has most of the gay bars, as well as the city’s most popular men-only gay sauna, Trombeta Bath. These are concentrated in and around Rua da Barroca, between Tv dos Fieis de Deus and Rua da Salgadeira.

Principe Real is where most of the clubs are, including Trumps, the biggest and most obvious place to head for a night of gay partying. Both neighborhoods are next to each other, so it’s just about a 10-minute walk from the bars to the clubs.

Bairro Alto is next to Chiado and Baixa, two of the city’s most historical areas. It is also close to the southern end of Avenida da Liberdade, which is Lisbon’s answer to the Champs-Elysees, with all the city’s most luxurious shops and hotels. This means that most hotels on this list are excellently positioned for both gay nightlife and Lisbon sightseeing.

If you do ever need to cover longer distances (or if the city’s many hills don’t appeal to you in the burning summer heat), public transport can usually help you out. Uber is also super cheap, so you can always get a taxi without worrying too much about the cost.

As is the case with many European capitals, rooms tend to be on the small side, even in the 4 and 5-star hotels. For more space, look at booking the higher categories of rooms.

Bairro Alto Hotel is located just between Bairro Alto and Chiado, offering the best of Lisbon’s cosmopolitan nightlife as well as its traditional cultural center. The location is impeccable for any visitor, but gay travelers are particularly well-served: Trombeta Bath is a tantalizing 3-minute walk away, while it’s just 15 minutes to Trumps and Lisbon’s most iconic gay nightlife.

This luxury boutique hotel has been designed with renowned Portuguese architects and designers, just recently undergoing a renovation led by award-winning architect Souto de Moura. The hotel itself is ranked within the top 30 Lisbon hotels on TripAdvisor and is the winner of a Conde Nast Traveler Reader’s Choice Award.

The rooms and suites are all supremely comfortable, most of them offering great views over the city and all including excellent amenities such as Le Labo toiletries, Marshall Dock Station, and high-tech entertainment system. The decor is elegant and subdued, with neutral and pastel tones highlighted by the occasional geometric pattern or pop of rich color.

Both BAHR, the hotel’s restaurant and bar, and the rooftop terrace feature menus designed by Michelin-star-winning chef Nuno Mendes. The latter is an intimate (bookings recommended!) and gorgeous spot to admire the city’s beautiful seaside location from above. Downstairs, a Pastelaria offers coffee and home-baked goods throughout the day. There is also a small but well-equipped gym and basic sauna facilities.

Located on leafy and luxurious Avenida da Liberdade, this Sofitel honors Lisbon’s rich history at the heart of Portugal’s glory days of exploration. The decor takes inspiration from the lands that Portuguese sailors came across in their travels, with subtle Asian and African influences mixed with a classically grand European style.

In the rooms, the style is warm and contemporary, with rich golden tones and a truly relaxing feel. Sofitel’s super-comfy MyBed design makes every night a pleasure, while high-end amenities like a Bose sound system, Illy espresso machine, and Lanvin toiletries add that extra touch of luxury.

There is a very good restaurant, AdLib, which blends Portuguese and French gastronomies, and a swanky lobby bar. Both specialize in Portuguese wines and drinks, with the bar especially offering an excellent selection of Port wines.

Sofitel Lisbon Liberdade is just across the boulevard from Lisbon’s newest gay sauna, Olissipo Bath. The Bairro Alto and Principe Real gay nightlife is about a 15-minute walk away, and Avenida metro station is just two minutes down the road.

Corinthia Hotel Lisbon is a modern, green, and stylish 5-star hotel in northern Lisbon. It was selected the World’s Leading City Hotel at the 2018 World Travel Awards, and is a longstanding favorite with gay visitors to Lisbon. The hotel features stylish and tasteful rooms and suites, many with incredible views of the city.

The hotel restaurant, Erva, serves up fresh local ingredients cooked on an open grill in an informal atmosphere. Meanwhile, Soul Garden is an oasis of tranquility, overflowing with flowers and plants and offering delicious cocktails and quick bites. Breakfast, served in a dedicated room with great views, is also exceptional.

Corinthia Lisbon stands out for its wellness facilities, which include a large heated indoor pool, a solarium, a well-equipped hotel gym, and a large award-winning spa. The latter is worth a visit in itself, with a range of luxury treatments and state-of-the-art sauna and bathing rooms.

The location of the Corinthia Hotel is a little out the way for central Lisbon. However, there is a metro stop nearby (Jardim Zoológico, about 5 minutes away) that connects directly to Chiado, the closest stop to Bairro Alto, so you can reach the central gay bars within 20 minutes. The location does also mean that the hotel is quiet and peaceful at night.

The Late Birds is one of two all-male gay hotels in Lisbon, and it is the higher-end of the two. It is set in a gorgeously restored 18th-century house and is based on an “Urban Resort” concept that prioritizes luxury, comfort, and exclusivity. It’s very much a boutique experience, with only 16 rooms and decor that has been carefully curated by the owners.

The rooms are decorated simply but tastefully in clean white tones, and feature large comfortable beds, high-end toiletries, floor-to-ceiling windows, and your own personal iMac computer. Some of them have private balconies and most have great views over the city.

Due to the intimate atmosphere, the common areas are one of the hotel’s best features: indeed, the stylish pool, lounge bar, and terrace are all perfectly suited to mingling with fellow guests. The cooked breakfast is exceptional, and there is even a delectable brunch on offer on weekends. The bar sometimes hosts live performances of traditional Portuguese music.

As can be expected of Lisbon’s premier gay hotel, the city’s gay nightlife is just next door. Trombeta Bath and the bars along Rua da Barroca are less than 5 minutes away on foot, and Trumps is just a 15-minute walk. The owners and staff are all lovely and knowledgeable about all things gay Lisbon, and so are a great resource for finding out what’s happening in the city.
